Men in the wedding would rush at the bride at the end of the ceremony in order to get her garter for themselves. They would then wear it on their hats until they found a girl to give it to for good luck.
Sometimes the bride would be knocked over and trampled off from this frenzy of activity so the tradition was soon tamed. They would simply throw it to the single men at the wedding reception and it became a big honor to catch it.
It’s funny to me that this small wedding accessories among all of the other wedding decorations was of such great meaning.
